Is Liver Injury Possible After Receiving the COVID-19 Vaccine?

During the COVID-19 pandemic the COVID-19 vaccine provided protection from the disease as well as a great sense of relief.  After all, it is believed to be the best way to provide protection against the deadly coronavirus. But just like everything, it can cause some side effects. People who have been administered the Covid-19 vaccine commonly report mild side effects such as mild body pain and fever. But a new study reveals that Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI) could also be a consequence of the COVID-19 vaccine treatment, but it is rare.

These new findings should not deter individuals from getting vaccinated, as the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. Fortunately, COVID-19 vaccine-induced liver dysfunctions can typically self-repair shortly after getting the COVID-19 Vaccination.

WHAT IS DRUG-INDUCED LIVER INJURY?

Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI) is an injury of the liver that may occur when you take certain medicines.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DRUG INDUCED LIVER INJURY?

If you or a loved one experiences any of the symptoms listed below after getting the COVID-19 vaccine, you should consult your doctor immediately because the vaccine may have triggered the symptoms.

  1. Belly pain.
  2. Tiredness and weakness.
  3. Fever.
  4. Nausea.
  5. Vomiting.
  6. Lack of appetite.
  7. Dark urine.
  8. Pale or clay-coloured stools.

HOW IS DRUG INDUCED LIVER INJURY TREATED?

Early diagnosis and withdrawal of the suspected medication is the mainstay of treatment of drug induced liver injury. In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine, there is no need to discontinue the medication since it is a one-time treatment.  If needed, there are other possible management modalities for DILI, including corticosteroids and ursodeoxycholic acid.

Liver abnormalities generally subside within two–five weeks after stopping the drug. In rare cases, cholestasis persists for up to six months.

All in all, drug induced liver injury reactions post getting a Covid-19 vaccine are rare and happen only in a small percentage of the people who are vaccinated. The benefits of getting the Covid-19 vaccine far outweigh its risks and organisations worldwide recommend that everyone protect themselves and loved ones by getting the vaccine.
