Which COVID-19 Test to Go for in 2022?

The UK government officially closed all of its free PCR test sites on April 1. It means that those who need day testing for COVID-19 must go to a private clinic to have their tests done for a fee.

The government’s decision to implement the Living with COVID-19 plan included a halt to taking online orders for test kits from gov.uk. However, testing options like Day 2 and 8 tests and day 5 testing are still available for sale in your local pharmacies, serving COVID 19 antigen tests in Wallington.

There are several types of COVID testing available to the public. A proper understanding of these types of tests is necessary to ensure the accuracy of the results.

Virus Test

Also known as antigen or swab tests, these work by checking if the COVID-19 virus currently infects you. It uses a swab sample extracted from your nose and throat or a saliva sample, which is then placed in the test kit to see the results.

The most common virus test used in the UK is the lateral flow antigen test, also called the rapid antigen test. It is easy to use and can give result in less than 30 minutes. However, these tests are not enough to get a fit to fly certificate.

Antibody Test

This COVID-19 test is taken by people who want to check if they have these antibodies that previously fought the virus. But unlike the virus test, antibody tests need blood samples.

The antibody tests are only offered to NHS and care staff at the moment. It is also applicable to some care home residents and hospital patients. You may purchase these tests in private clinics, but they are not intended for diagnosis.

Current COVID-19 Test Rules in the UK

The UK government lifted the requirement to complete a UK passenger locator form before travelling. It means you do not have to prioritise getting day tests before you leave or when arriving in England and other parts of the UK.

Quarantine rules are also lifted in the country. By the end of March, all the quarantine facilities had halted operations. Travellers no longer need to be quarantined upon arrival, whether they are vaccinated or unvaccinated.

However, you must check the travel advice for the country from which you will depart to learn about their COVID-19 travel rules. It will help you determine if you still need to test or quarantine at your own expense.
