What is tick-borne Encephalitis?

Also known as TBE, it is a viral infection that can spread to humans by the bite of a parasite that looks like a mini spider, and it is called “TICK.”

It is most common in Europe, including parts of England, Russia, Japan, and China. Ticks are most commonly present in grassy areas, and you are more at risk if you go hiking or camping.

What are the different types of tick-borne encephalitis and their symptoms?

  1. Western European tick-borne encephalitis
  2. Siberian tick-borne encephalitis
  3. Far Eastern tick-borne encephalitis

About two of every three people infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus do not develop symptoms, but it can be hazardous if symptoms start to show up.

Some initial symptoms of tick-borne encephalitis will develop between two and 28 days after being bitten by a tick. Symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Malaise
  • Tiredness/weakness
  • Muscle pain
  • Vomiting

What are the possible causes?

You primarily find ticks in the woods, forests, riverside, and brushwood.

You can be infected if an infected tick bites you. The virus is commonly present in the saliva, which contains an anesthetic compound so that a person would not notice the bite.

How to prevent Tick-borne encephalitis?

  • Avoid going to wooded, brushy, or grassy areas where ticks are possibly there.
  • Apply insect repellants to your skin when going outside. Products that contain DTE are more effective.
  • Cover your skin whenever going outside and tuck your pants inside your socks.
  • Stick to paths
  • Always wear light-colored clothes so you can easily see if there is a tick on your clothes, and you can easily brush them off.
  • Always check your skin, hair, and clothes after going outside.

And the most effective way to prevent this is, of course, having yourself vaccinated with TBE. Two injections can protect a person from the virus for a year. Then, a third injection can cover you for about three years. A person needs to have the vaccine one month before the travel.

Where can I find the TBE vaccine?

Different locations offer the TBE vaccine in London. Here are some:

  • Carshalton
  • Sutton
  • Hack bridge
  • Wallington
  • Croydon

Being vaccinated is one of the most effective actions a person can take to prevent diseases from transmitting to the body. Always check your health and wellness. Sometimes we may think it is just a tiny bite, but we don’t know that it can be life-threatening. Do not self-medicate. Always ask for professional help.
