Antigen Vs. PCR Test: What's the Difference?
After a solid two years of living with Covid-19, there are finally some solid testing options that are widely and easily available that can produce accurate results quickly. PCR Tests and Antigen Tests (aka Rapid Antigen Tests) are still the most reliable and widely used to test for Covid-19. Fit-to-Fly Certificates are also a different type of Covid-19 testing that is used specifically for travel. So, it’s important to know what kind of test you need to take because of the differences between each.
Anna Pharmacy has numerous locations throughout South London for Covid-19 testing. We offer PCR tests, Rapid Antigen swab tests, and Fit to Fly PCR tests in Carshalton.
What is the difference between a PCR and an Antigen Test?
The
PCR and Antigen tests use different methods to identify the presence of
Covid-19 in your body, with PCR tests being a bit more thorough. If you have
the Coronavirus, there’s a greater chance you’ll test positive with a PCR test
than with a rapid antigen test.
PCR
Tests are the most accurate tests available due to their high sensitivity for
detecting the Coronavirus, and thus, the most widely used. Whereas a Rapid
Antigen Test can be done at a clinic, or you can purchase a home test kit from
Anna Pharmacy.
Rapid
Antigen Tests (RAT) are easier you can do it quickly at your local pharmacy or
you can do one at home to obtain faster results.
But there is a pitfall to the Rapid Antigen Tests. Antigen tests in Hackbridge and at other locations typically provide results in under fifteen minutes, but they are more likely to yield false-negative results due to lesser sensitivity, especially for those that are asymptomatic.
