Blood in your phlegm - Causes & Advice

 


Coughing up blood is an alarming sign. But many times, it may not be a serious threat. It is not a problematic sign when you're young or healthy. But in older age, the blood in phlegm is generally a more common cause for concern. Especially if the person is an ardent smoker.

 The blood in Coughing differs over time. From Coughing up small amounts of bright red blood to frothy blood-streaked sputum ( mostly saliva or phlegm), the variations are many. The blood usually in the lungs is a result of prolonged chest Infections or saturated coughing.

 Things to do if u happen to cough out blood:

As soon as you find out blood is coughing, make sure you visit a doctor as soon as possible. It is also important to pay a visit to a doctor if:

●  The person ends up coughing  more than a combination of a few teaspoons of blood

● If there is the presence of chest pain along with dizziness, fever or faint light-headedness. Worsening of breath may also be a reason to pay a visit to a doctor without delay.

● Presence of loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss

● Presence of blood in the patient's urine, blood, or stools.

 Tests that may be needed

There may be many tests that you are asked to take part in, to determine the reason for the presence of blood in phlegm.  You may be asked for a sample of your sputum as it is then checked for infection. Other tests, such as blood tests, may also be advised.

 Many times you may be further referred to a specialist at your local hospital for a chest X-ray. They can also ask you for a more detailed scan, such as a computerized tomography (CT) scan.

 There may be various reasons as to why one coughs up blood. But listed below are some of the most common reasons for coughing up blood:

● a prolonged, severe cough

● a chest infection –In such cases, the sputum is discolored or may even contain pus. If you have a persistent fever, or a feeling of tightness in your chest then you need to get checked as soon as possible. If you're likely wheezy or short of breath, it may be a major sign of concern.

● Sometimes a severe nosebleed or continuous bleeding from the mouth or throat can also be the main cause behind blood coming out in your phlegm when you cough.

 It is always advisable to consult a doctor no matter what amount of blood comes out with the discharge.
